    GRAND RAPIDS -- Rick Beckett, a fixture on West Michigan radio and the co-host of WOOD AM's "The Rick and Scott Show," died Thursday night after suffering a heart attack, the station management t worked for WGRD-FM and WKLQ-FM before joining NewsRadio WOOD more than five years ago. He would have celebrated his sixth anniversary at the station in April.

    His ongoing health issues were often a topic of conversation on the air, but WOOD program director Angie Vuyst said Beckett, 54, was "doing better."

    "It was no surprise his health had been ailing for a while and he had ongoing health issues, but as of recently he was doing real wellThis took a lot of us by surprise," Vuyst said.

    Beckett and Scott Winters worked together for nearly 15 years. They were together at WGRD-FM and WKLQ-FM and joined WOOD at the same time.

    Rick was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan and moved to Grand Rapids shortly thereafter. He began his radio career while still in high school at Union High School in Grand Rapids at WZZM-FM in , where he worked part-time on weekends. His career started as a result of his involvement in a Junior Achievement program called HERO. Shortly after his graduation from high school in , Rick was fired from WZZM. He moved on to WLAV and worked there until early He then received his first full-time job at WGTO-AM (now WFLF (AM)) in Cypress Gardens, Florida. Beckett returned to WZZM-FM in , which by this time became WZZR-FM (now WLHT). He worked evenings for the majority of his time there but eventually worked the afternoon drive.

    Beckett was fired from WZZR in and moved on to do radio at WAAY-AM (now WLOR) in Huntsville, Alabama. He was fired from WAAY in mid and returned to Cypress Gardens to work at WZNG-AM (now WHNR). He was also fired from WZNG.
