Women for Sobriety (WFS) is a non-profitsecularaddiction recovery group for women with addiction problems. WFS was created by sociologistJean Kirkpatrick in 1976 as an alternative to twelve-step addiction recovery groups like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). As of 1998 there were more than 200 WFS groups worldwide.[1] Only women are allowed to attend the organization's meetings as the groups focus specifically on women's issues. WFS is not a radical feminist, anti-male, or anti-AA organization.[2]

The methods of what is now the "New Life" program of Women for Sobriety empowered Kirkpatrick to quit drinking. Discovered through trial and error, the New Life methods are based largely on the writings of Ralph Waldo Emerson (particularly his essay, "Self-Reliance") and the Unity Movement of New Thought in addition to Kirkpatrick's personal experience, knowledge of sociology, and experience in AA.[2] In her design, as in AA, WFS encourages the open and hosting sharing but focuses on improving self-esteem and reducing guilt rather than admitting powerlessness. For most of her life, Jean Kirkpatrick broke all the rules. An alcoholic, she couldn’t keep a job, was arrested for drunk driving, spent time in a mental hospital and tried twice to kill herself.
“I had wasted my entire life,” she says today, more than two decades after her recovery. “It took me so long to wake up.”
An energetic 72-year-old who lives in Quakertown, Kirkpatrick prefers casual dress and a simple hairstyle. She is no glamorous celebrity, but her face is familiar to thousands of women — former alcoholics — whom she has helped.
Kirkpatrick is executive director of Women for Sobriety (WFS), an international organization she founded in the mid-1970s.
She has been recognized in this country and abroad for her work in alcoholism. In 1978, she received the Raymond Haupert Humanitarian Award from Moravian College.
Perhaps the secret to Kirkpatrick’s success is that she can relate so personally to the stories of the women who come to her for help.
