Ruben Jeyasundaram never met Rohan de Saram before his passing last September, yet the renowned cellist was paradoxically a frequent presence. Residency Spotlight
Ruben Jeyasundaram's residency with the Chamber Music Society of Colombo (CMSC) will consist of two concerts and multiple cello masterclasses. The first concert on the 8th of February at the Galle Literary Festival, will be with principal members of the CMSC, including the concertmaster Lakshman Joseph-de Saram, Sulara Nanayakkara, principal second violin and Avanti Perera, co-principal viola. The program will include the string quartets of Sergei Rachmaninoff and the South Asian premier of Dutch composer Henk Alkema’s string quartet No.1.
The second concert on the 16th of February at the Goethe-Institut Hall, is a tribute to the late Sri Lankan-British cellist, Rohan de Saram, who was one of the most influential cellists in his day. The concert will include the Shostakovich Cello Sonata in D minor, works by Robert Schumann and Paul Hindemith, and string quartets by Alkema and Hindemith. Performing will be: Ruben Jeyasundaram, cello. Johann Pieris, piano. Lakshman Joseph-de Saram, violin I. Sulara Nanayakkara, violin II, and Avanti Perera, viola.
