In a year marked by loss, comes the news of dance maestro Saroj Khan’s passing at the age of 71 due to a cardiac arrest in Mumbai. The choreographer is survived by her husband and three children, the oldest of whom, Sukaina Khan, confirmed the news this morning. Having started her career as a child artist, Khan's legacy lives on in the reels of Bollywood’s cinematic history through the superstar celebrities she choreographed—as well as the generation of fans who grew up dancing to her iconic moves within the sanctuary of their bedrooms.
Over the course of her career in Bollywood, Khan choreographed over 2,000 songs. After moving from background dancer to assistant choreographer, she became a household name with the late Sridevi’s scene-stealing performance in ‘Hawa Hawai’ from Mr India (1987). Her name soon became attached to the hitmakers of the time, including a long-standing association with dancing sensation Madhuri Dixit Nene. Saroj Khan and Divya Khosla Kumar danced to Yaad Piya Ki Aane Lagi at an awards show in March. The choreographer died at the age of 71 on Friday.
Veteran choreographer Saroj Khan is no more. She breathed her last in the early hours of Friday after suffering a cardiac arrest. She was 71.
Hours after Saroj’s death, a video of her from the last event attended by her has surfaced online. It was taken at the Iconic Women Of The Year Awards 2020 in March, where she was honoured for her contribution to the film industry. In the video, Saroj and actor-filmmaker Divya Khosla Kumar are seen dancing together to Yaad Piya Ki Aane Lagi.
Saroj choreographed many memorable songs, including Kaate Nahi Kat Te from Mr India (1987), Dhak Dhak Karne Laga from Beta (1992), Tip Tip Barsa Pani from Mohra (1994) and Dola Re Dola from Devdas (2002). She also won three National Awards.
Many Bollywood celebrities paid tributes to the choreographer. Madhuri Dixit, who worked with Saroj in songs such as Ek Do Teen, Chane Ke Khet Mein and Humko Aaj Kal Hai Intezaar, wrote an emotional note on Instagram.
