My original plan for May 16 was to fly into DFW, and join the farewell-celebration migration for our iconic cowboy friend Larry Mahan, before working this week’s Women’s Rodeo World Championship right there at those historic Fort Worth Stockyards. A phone call from Lane Frost’s mom, Elsie, took me instead on a lesser-traveled trail seven hours north to the inaugural Redding Rodeo Hall of Fame Gala, which was held on the banks of the Sacramento River that same evening. What an honor to be asked to accept her son and my friend Lane Frost’s induction with the Redding Rodeo Hall of Fame Class of 2023.
I have a lifetime of happy memories from right there at the Redding Rodeo, starting about 50 years ago when it was so hot that we walked my dad’s rope horses Sockeye and Twiggy out into the Sacramento River and just stood out there in the cool water with them. The record rains and snowfall have the Sacramento roaring extra for this year’s great Northern California tradition’s 75th anniversary, which this week celebrates “75 Years Buckin’ by the River.”
