“It’s the first time I’ve been canned by cell phone,” e-mailed award-winning broadcast news journalist Michael Linder on what happened Aug. 6 when he learned he was being dropped by KABC/790 AM.
“I’d just cornered Richard Alarcon on his first day back in (L.A.) City Council after his indictment and wrapped up a one-on-one with Eli Broad on the controversy over his Grand Avenue Museum when I got the call,” he said.
“Management repeatedly said this was ‘nothing to do with your work.’ Still, I find it hard to believe that cutting its presence at breaking news, or digging deep into investigative stories, will enhance a station’s credibility and authenticity,” he added.
Linder joined KABC in 2009 after a four-year career as investigative reporter and fill-in host at KNX/1070 AM. His résumé is impressive: he was an executive producer and on-air reporter at KTLA, an independent producer-director on the Emmy-winning PBS science series “Future Quest,” and creator and executive producer of Fox’s “America’s Most Wanted,” now in its 20th season. He’s the man who hired John Walsh to host the series.
