Dorothy never knew her parents. Her father died before she was born, and her mother died in childbirth. Orphaned as a baby, Dorothy was raised by her father's brother Henry, and his wife, Emily, on a failing farm in Americana's Heartland.
For Dorothy's tenth birthday, Dorothy found a stray dog, which she brought home and named "Toto". Uncle Henry and Aunt Em allowed Dorothy to keep the dog, feeling the dog had found Dorothy for a reason. Though Toto was a mostly well-behaved dog, he was also rather curious and rambunctious. He had a habit of slipping away and getting himself into dangerous or messy situations that Dorothy would have to rectify. One such instance happened when Dorothy was eleven....
